Pennsylvania

I had three reasons to go on a road trip down to Pennsylvania:

Reason one:   Fallingwater

Reason two:   Gettysburg

Reason three:  Lancaster County

How did I hear about Fallingwater - the daily meetings in our dog park seems to have a vast information pool about travel destinations. So I marked it as "must to see"building by the American architect and interior designer Frank Lloyd Wright. In the 1930's, at the heights of the great Depression the Kaufmann family had their summer residents built by Mr. Wright. Perched atop a waterfall and surrounded by majestic trees.

...there was such peace between nature and man made structure

Frank LLoyd Wright designed every detail and furniture which were attached to the inner walls that nothing could be moved and interfere with the integrity of the house. He designed the car garage as an open concept to avoid clutter. Tours should be booked well in advance .

Gettysburg
My husband loves history on hand and this year they marked the 150th Gettysburg Commemoration in July.

We visited the Civil War battle fields and where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his most famous speech in 1863.

Lancaster County

As you know this is Amish Country and inevitable lots of quilting stores.
The heat wave had temperature close to 40 C. I still have to think what would it be in Fahrenheit but I am so glad we measure all our quilting stuff in inches so we don't have to multiply by 2.73 cm which makes it very complicated.

WE stopped at Buckholder's Fabric and you need a very very patient husband while I was glancing over 30.000 bolds of fabric. Honestly you get dizzy. But I was really intrigued about the daily life of Amish people. A life without any electricity, no cars, no bicycles ( only push bikes) no i-phones, no churches, no malls and what I saw were happy and hard working people.

  1. Great post, Ludgera. Love the picture of the boy on top of the working horses.

  2. Ludgera, your photos are beautiful. I loved Falling Water, but one of the things that impressed me was the overwhelming presence of the ego of Frank Lloyd Wright. He was clearly a genius, but a little control obsessed.

  3. You are so right - he was control obsessed which made his design outstanding.

  4. Three very good reasons indeed. I've always wanted to go to Fallingwater. Gettsyburg and Amish country take me back 40 years to graduate student days in Princeton. Wonderful photos.
